Vol. 4 No. 10 - October 1957

First things First
The story is told of two brothers who were in business together and they found things going from bad to worse. At last they decided they had better do something; through the suggestion of one brother they became a success. He suggested, "Let's inaugurate a new system. Let's be thankful for what we have, and let everybody know it." The effect was electric. From a failing business grew one of the largest department stores in America.
Good manners ensures success. A pleasant smile, a firm handshake, a sincere inquiry to know how things are, a grateful 'thank you' for a favor or service rendered, the joy of doing more than what is requested, are all virtues that lead to a noble character and bespeak of refinement. You may not have the education of doctors or lawyers, but you can on your own develop the virtuous qualities that are not acquired in the colleges and universities of man, that will set you apart and give you a magnetic character. This month do all you can to be pleasant to all you meet, express your appreciation for any favor or service. Radiate the joy and thanksgiving you feel in the testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
We are all volunteers in this service. We seek not for wealth but rather to bring others unto a knowledge of the message of the great Restored Church of our Savior. We should never worry about who is to receive the credit for this or that. The important thing is that we fulfill our great calling enthusiastically. Our work should never become tiring or boring, but rather should always be exciting and interesting. We should not shirk from responsibility but rather should seek to do more than what is expected of us. We should never seek for a position or office, but rather accept willingly any assignment that we are given and then magnify it by doing our very best. We should avoid being a non-conformist, and seek to conform to all rules and regulations thus building firmly for those who come after us. Never be satisfied with doing just what is expected of you, or just enough to fall among the average, but strive to give the very best that is in you.
Bare your testimony to your companion daily and tell him thanks for his help and cooperation and at night before you retire, thank Him who has made all this possible.
Sincerely your brother,
Asael T. Sorensen
